OPERA
(2025)

The Sator-Arepo formula is a palindrome and, according to folklore, a magical word square. It appears in grimoires across most European countries. Three of its words come from Latin — sator (“sower”), tenet (“holds”), and opera (“work, deed”) — though the overall meaning remains disputed. The formula is known from the first century AD and is inlaid in the floor of a church in Cremona dating from the 11th century. It is thought to have served as a Christian symbol or secret password at a time when open confession of faith was dangerous. By the Middle Ages, it was already being used as a charm or incantation. Some have also noted that the formula contains all the letters of Pater noster.
